Saint Symeon the Stylite Monastery

This 5th century monastery is located in Syria. It was built around the pillar of St Symeon at the heart of the “dead cities” (a name given to a vast area of abandoned Christian sites). The cross-shaped church was the largest structure built in Christendom before Hagia Sophia was built by Justinian in Constantinople.
